MASTERTON POSTMASTER RETIRES farewell by staff. WELCOME TO SUCCESSOR. Members of the Masterton Post Office staff assembled in the mail, room yesterday afternoon to farewell the retiring postmaster, Mr M. M. Simpson, and welcome the new postmaster, Mr R. A. Mace. Mr E. J. Burke, Telegraph Supervisor, in making a presentation to M:' i Simpson of a fireside chair and a cush- ( ion, referred to Mr Simpson’s long,as'-" sociation with the Department. On the completion of his retiring leave in three months’ time, he would have been 44 years with the Department. Mr Burke read a letter from the DirectorGeneral of the P. & T. Department, eulogising the retiring postmaster’s services, and went on to refer to the eventful time he had had during his five years in Masterton, under war conditions ,which involved much additional licensing and control orders, E.P.S. organisation, and in addition, but not'-, least, the earthquake of last year. Mr v Simpson, he said, was still full of action, and probably would go on to fresh efforts. He wished both Mr and Mrs Simpson well in them retirement. Mr Burke’s remarks were endorsed by Messrs W. E. Teeboon, supervisor, postmaster’s branch; S. Taylor, accountant, and F. W. Dwyer, actingsupervisor, mail room. Mr B. Seddon, storeman, handed a bouquet to Mr Simpson for Mrs Simpson. In reply, Mr Simpson made reference to some of his experiences in the department, and said he had been very happy in Masterton, and regretted having to leave the department after such a long time of service. He had not decided what ot do, but he would be in Masterton for a little while at least.
Three cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Simpson. The newly appointed postmaster, Mr Mace, said it was obvious that Mr Simpson had maintained a fairly high standard in the office, and he hoped that the same high standard would be continued. He wished Mr and Mrs Simpson every happiness in their retirement. ; Mr Mace has been postmaster at Paeroa for several years.
