Yesterday, St. Andrew’s Day, was the sixty-ninth birthday of Mr Winston Churchill.

Mrs A. Buchanan, of Renall Street, Masterton, has returned from a visit to Wellington. Mr S. G. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, will return to Wellington this week from his visit to Australia. Mesdames .Bloxam and H. Berney, Renall Street, Masterton, who have been on a visit to Wairoa, have returned home.

The engagement is announced of Violet, second daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Voss, Tinui, to Corporal Jack First, U.S.M.C., only son of Mr and Mrs H. M. First, California, U.S.A. The death occurred on Monday in Wellington of Mr Edward Bolton Bristow, formerly a director of the firm of George Thomas and Co., Wellington. Mr Bristow was in his eighty-eighth year.

The death occurred this morning, after a short illness, of Raymond Maurice, the four-year-old son of Mr and Mrs R. G. Harman, of Miriam Street, Masterton. The funeral will take place tomorrow, leaving the Chapel of Hyde’s Funeral Service Ltd, following a service at 2 p.m. for the Masterton Cemetery. Mr M. J. Reardon, Conciliation Commissioner, who retired from the office yesterday, presided over his last conciliation council sitting yesterday, when he heard the biscuit and confectioners’ dispute. At the conclusion of the proceedings, Mr W. E. Anderson, secretary of the Auckland Employers’ Association, who had acted as advocate for the employers, referred to Mr Reardon’s outstanding work in the past as workers’ representative on the Arbitration Court, and later as conciliation commissioner. Mr Anderson , said Mr Reardon had always held the respect of employers throughout the country, and, on behalf of the employers, he wished him a long and happy retirement. Mr J. Purtell, secretary of the Biscuit and Confectioners’ Industrial Union of Workers, who had acted as advocate for the workers in the dispute, endorsed Mr Anderson’s remarks.
