EIGHTH ARMY BRIDGEHEAD

Reinforcements Pouring Across Sangro

HEAVY AND SUSTAINED AIR ATTACKS ON ENEMY AMERICANS GAIN MORE GROUND IN MOUNTAINS LONDON, November 28. The Eighth Army in Italy has further enlarged its bridgehead over the Sangro River and a steady stream of reinforcements is pouring across. Allied aircraft are giving the Germans plenty to worry about. Yesterday, in the coastal sector alone, they flew over 500 sorties. Some of the positions attacked were little more than a mile from the Allied forward troops. Further inland, the Eighth Army is steadily closing in on the Sangro line. In the Central Apennines, there are signs that the Germans are preparing to pull out of the positions they still hold south of the river. -On the right flank of the Fifth Army, American troops have fought their way forward two miles to capture some high ground. At various parts of the Fifth Army’s front, both sides are exchanging plenty of fire and patrols are- everywhere. Allied aircraft are out in force and are having things all their own way. Heavy bombers are keeping, up their attacks on ports and railways to the north. Flying Fortresses, which attacked targets on the Adriatic coast, shot down seven out of a force of nearly 50 German fighters. American medium bombers also attacked targets on the Adriatic coast and in Yugoslavia. Five planes are missing from the day’s work.'
