SPLENDID DISPLAY

INTERHOUSE GIRLS’ MARCHING CONTEST HONOURS TO HUGO & SHEARER’S. MISS V. PRICE AGAIN CHAMPION LEADER. A blaze of colour from the brilliant uniforms worn by the one hundred and twenty girls competing in the Wairarapa Interhouse Association’s gala day events on the Masterton Park Oval on Saturday afternoon stood out in striking contrast to the dark clouds overhead. There was an attendance of well over 4,000 people who warmly applauded the wonderful display presented by the teams. All the girls' performed with credit to their coaches. Promptly at 2.15 o’clock the teams paraded around the oval and marched in front of the grandstand. The Union Jack was unfurled and the National Anthem was played. ' Mr P. F. Fagan, a vice-president, declared the gathering open and apologised for the absence, due to illness, of the president, Mr L. B. Maunsell.

A feature of the marching by the i, 'teams was the precision they put into their movements and all showed all- . round smartness. The costuming was most effective. Some striking colour combinations were achieved. Hugo and Shearer’s were awarded first honours and won the handsome A. and P. Association’s challenge cup. Hansell’s A team finished in second place to win the “Times-Age” challenge cup, and J. R. McKenzie’s team finished third to take the J. H. Cunningham challenge cup. The points scored by the teams were: Hugo and Shearer Ltd., 137|; Hansell’s Ltd., 134; J. R. McKenzie’s Ltd., 1301; Rolph’s, 1291; Woolworth’s Ltd., 126; Transport Wairarapa Ltd., 124-1; Hansell’s B, 1241; Cathie’s Ltd., 1201; W.F.C.A. Ltd., 119; Wairarapa Steam Laun- ; dry, 114; Combined Businesses, 112; Hospital Indoor Staff, 1061. Members of the placed teams and their coaches are:—Hugo and Shearer (blue and white. —Leader, Miss B. Vincent; coach, Miss B. Vincent; Mesdames McMahon, O. Schiller, J. Lee and Misses V. Foster, B. Hanley, E. Madsen, T. Davis, J. Rossiter and R. Chorley. Hansell’s (A) (tartan and white).—Leader, Miss V. Price; coach, Mr C. C. Harding; ' Misses C. Talbot, J. Gleeson, E. Talbot, G. Nyhane, M. Williams, B. Bourne,, J. Phillips, L. Moor and A. Emerson. J. R. McKenzie’s (red and white). —Leader, Miss J. Gray; coach, Mr W. Harding; Misses J. Smith, M. Johnston, P. Atkins, P. Clark, B. Alexander, C. Breeze, J. Fulton, P. Smith, and P. Logan. OTHER AWARDS, Miss Valmai Price, of Hansell’s team, was accorded the honour of .champion leader for the second successive year and again won the Levin Cup. She scored 81 points and Miss B. Vincent of Hugo and Shearer’s Ltd., was close behind with 8 points.

The award to the neatest team on parade (Flamingo trophy), was made to Hansell’s B team with 84 points. Combined Businesses and Hansell’s A tied for second place with 8 points. Combined Businesses were awarded a special prize for the most effective costume viewed from the grandstand. As each team marched past its splendid performance drew an ovation from, the crowd. The winning team gave an exhibition march and received pro-, longed applause. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, said the display was a splendid one and he thanked the Interhouse Association for its efforts in aid of thd Patriotic Fund. Mr G. H. Mackley, M.P., congratulated all concerned on the wonderful display and apologised for the absence of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry. An innovation which worked out to the satisfaction of all was the appointment of women judges. They were members of the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps, Warrant Officer P. H. Horn, and Sergeants F. A. Nicholson, M. B. Shultz, M. G. Smith and 8./P. Lowe. SPORTS PROGRAMME. A high standard was set by competitors in the sports programme and there were many thrilling finishes.
