CARTERTON

ST. MARK’S GUILD

ANNUAL SALE OF WORK. ("Times-Age” Special.) St. Mark’s Church Ladies’ Guild held a very successful sale of work in the State Theatre yesterday, the best results yet recorded being achieved. The excellent organisation of the sale reflected the greatest credit on those responsible. The secretary, Mrs Harding, carried out her duties in a capable manner, and the Guild is fortunate in having such a splendid secretary. The members of the Guild generally and the stallholders worked hard to bring about the satisfactory result recorded. Mr D. L. Taverner, Mayor of Carterton, declared the gathering, officially open. The takings amounted to £lB9 12s ,4d and the additional donations promised, are expected to bring the amount up to £2OO. The takings at the various stalls were as follow:—-Produce, £l3 10s 9d; aprons, £l2 14s sd; fancy, £33 ss; Guild, £26 5s 7d; white elephant, £lO 17s 7d; cakes, £lO 10s; second hand goods, £5 15s 6d; woollies, £l6 17s 6d; bargains, £l7 17s Id; refreshments, £2B 15s sd; Miss Davis, £l3 3s 6d. The thanks of the Guild are extended to all who assisted in making such a success of the sale.

PARENTS’ DAY CELEBRATED AT SCHOOL. Parents’ Day was celebrated at the Carterton District High School yesterday in order to give parents and others interested an insight into modern school methods, and particularly an opportunity to see the new drill in operation. A very large number of adults was present throughout the day to see the various classes at Work. The headteacher drew the attention of parents to the outstanding differences between school today and the methods and objectives of ten and twenty years' ago. Appreciation was expressed of the opportunity given to witness a normal school day. Advantage of the occasion was also taken to hold the calf and lamb judging. Personal Items. Mr George Robinson, of Papatoetoe, is visiting relatives in Carterton and Masterton. Young People’s Anniversary. The Salvation Army will hold their Young People’s Anniversary in the Army Hall tomorrow. Special meetings will be conducted by Mrs Leighton, Masterton, Home League Secretary, at 11 a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The Tiny Tots prize-giving will take place at the 2.30 o’clock service.
