NEW ZEALAND CUP MEETING EVENTS AT RICCARTON TOMORROW. FORM REVIEWED. Interest will centre on Riccarton on Saturday when the New Zealand Cup meeting will take place. The Wairarapa will be well represented. Silvio, Indian Sign and Sir Wina are among the locally trained horses, while Mr J. M. James, of Master ton, has a strong hand with Poutatau in the sprint.
In spite of his defeat by Tweedsmuir the four-year-old Representative, put up a good trial for the New Zealand Cup when he finished second in the King George Handicap at Ellerslie recently. It was only by a head that he was beaten, and the mile and a half was run in 2.31 3-ssecs., a time 'that is seldom bettered at Ellerslie. Moreover, Representative gave the winner 27 pounds. Representative held on at the end like a sound stayer, and there is little doubt about his stamina. His full sister, Serenata, put up a race record of 3.20 4-ssecs. when she won the New Zealand Cup in 1940. Hopes that he will prove a genuine twomiler are strengthened by the development he has shown from three to four years old. Nightmarch, sire of Representative and Serenata, won both the Melbourne Cup and the New Zeaalnd Cup for which he holds the weight carrying record, having won as a five year old in 1930 with 9.6. On Saturday Representative will carry 91bs. less than in the King George Handicap, and he is still 101 b. under weight for age.
Gladynev ran a promising race at Levin last Saturday and recent activities have all prepared him for his Cup mission. Having run second for the past two years a New Zealand Cup win would be most popular. Don Quex will be bracketed with Gladynev and the two make a strong appeal. The consistent Rakanui will probably be well supported. The Hunting Song gelding ran a nice race in the Cup last year to finish a head behind Gladynev. Battledress has apparently returned to form. As a three-year-old he won five races on end. However it is doubtful if he has had enough racing this season to see out two miles. 1 . In the lightweights Tire Monarch, Foxhaven and Patria make most appeal, but on the day the public will most likely declare for: Representative, Gladynev bracket, Rakanui. In the sprint event Lord Advocate and Royal Flight are two first liners who deserve consideration. Indian Sign and Poutatau are two improvers. Sir Bradbury ran so well at Trentham that he cannot be left out of consideration. Possibly public fancies may be: Royal Flight, Poutatau, Indian Sign. For other events the public may declare for: — Middleton Handicap: Invincible, Norse, Big Top. Spring Nursery: Intense, Blue Bonny. Apprentices Handicap: Sir Wina, Justitia, Caithness.
