DISCOLOURED WATER

CAUSED BY SANDSTONE SLIP HIGH UP IN WAINGAWA GORGE A slip in sandstone country high up in the Waingawa Gorge has caused discolouration in the Masterton borough water supply. Each time the river floods erosion of the slip takes place. The sandstone is very soft and at a touch dissolves into a fine powder, which remains in the water for two or three days. The filter beds take out the greater part of the particles of muddy sandstone but a certain amount gets through and causes the discolouration. The Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, said today that a filter bed had been cleaned out recently and the main pipes had been flushed. That had caused further discolouration.
