MANPOWER APPEALS
PROVISION FOR REHEARING OF APPEALS. STATEMENT BY MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) - WELLINGTON, This Day. In order to clear up any possible misconception regarding industrial , manpower appeal rights, the Minister of Industrial Manpower (Mr McLagan) made a statement today. The regulations, he said, provided quite definitely that the Controller of Manpower could direct the further rehearing of .an appeal in whole or in part, either if he had reason to believe that the determination of a committee was obtained by fraud or if he had reason to believe that any new material evidence was' available. If either of the parties before a manpower appeal committee subsequently secured new and material evidence, which if available at the time of the hearing might have led to a different determination, such a party could place the matter 'directly in the hands of the Controller, with a request for a rehearing. The approach to the Controller was direct and could not be denied by any officer. It was, therefore, clear that full provision existed for rehearing and that this was not denied, as appeared to be the. belief in certain quarters, judging by a recently published report.
