IN GILBERT ISLANDS LANDINGS STATED BY COLONEL KNOX. SHORTENING SUPPLY LINES. LONDON, November 23. The American occupation of islands in the Gilbert group, the United States Secretary for the Navy (Colonel Knox) said today, had two main purposes. The first was a drive against the Japanese in the mandated islands. The second was the shortening by hundreds of miles of the American supply lines across the Pacific. This was as valuable as the addition of many ships to the Navy. The American invasion of the Gilbert Islands, Colonel Knox said, marked the beginning of a new drive aimed directly at Japan across the Central Pacific. Colonel Knox said the diversionary attack on the Marshall Islands had served its purpose in clearing the skies over the Gilberts of enemy aircraft. Enemy surface ships also failed to put in an appearance. Air attacks on the enemy in Nauru Island have done so much damage that the island has largely lost its strategic importance. Air crews have reported silent enemy batteries and both airfields on the island out of action.
