LEBANON CRISIS
CATROUX DEFENDS FRENCH INTERESTS RELATIONS WITH BRITAIN. MUTUAL CONFIDENCE DESIRED. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.0 a.m.) LONDON, November 19. General Catroux, addressing a Press conference at Beirut, declared: “1 want nothing better than to behave as a good ally and co-operate with the British, but as a Frenchman I must see to the interests of my country. British interference in Lebanon should be confined to military affairs, or matters relating to military affairs, leaving France to deal with the political situation, which is purely a French-Lebanese question. People should not be given the idea that the two Powers arc at present working against each other’s interests. Mutual confidence is absolutely neccssary.” The British Minister of State in the Middle East (Mr R. G. Casey) has arrived in Beirut and will confer WiuGeneral Catroux today.
