MEDICAL DISCOVERY

POSSIBLE CURE FOR COMMON COLD. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, November 18. Medical men are investigating what is hoped to prove a cure for the common cold. Professor W. E. Gye, Director of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, while suffering from a severe cold received a sample of a new substance, petulin, which is intended for cancer tests. Petulin, like penscillin, is derived from a fungus. Professor Gyo, knowing its antibacterial qualities, tried it as a nasal douche for his cold, with the result that he was completely well the next morning. Experiments since carried out among naval men and Wrens have shown good results, but' petulin will not be released till further trials have established its value and safety.
