WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNCIL DAMAGE TO ROADS BY ARMY SERVICES OF CLERK EULOGISED (“Times-Age” Special.) The following business was transacted at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council at Carterton yesterday afternoon, after the “Times-Age” went to press. Mr Latham was granted, subject to an annual charge, water rights permanently to supply that part of his property which is out of the water race area. This was agreed to on the recommendation of the chairman, Cr. Allen, and the County water race overseer. It was reported that £65 had been received for grass seed that was harvested on County roads by employees of the Council. It was resolved to accept the tender of W. P. Windust, Otahuhu, Auckland, for a supply of dog collars. The Public Works Department wrote asking for particulars of the damage to the main highway and rural roads in the county caused by the Army. It was reported that the clerk, with the assistance of the overseer, had submitted a statement to the Department, and this action was endorsed. It was resolved that the telephone at Ahiaruhe be transferred to Mr Howie’s residence, and that arrangements in connection with installing a telephone at Te Wharau for the roadman be left to Crs. McGregor and Cameron. The overseer was instructed to dispose of road blocks that had been placed near bridges in the county for use in emergency. It was decided that the roads be restored to their former condition.
It was decided that Waterson’s Line, in the Dalefield riding, be put into a state of repair with the road grader. After discussion, it was resolved to invest £4OOO in the National Savings Account to assist the Government’s £5.000,000 Loan. Cr. Court mentioned the amount of work and time that had been put in by their clerk, Mr Beaven, in regard to earthquake damage to chimneys, and thought some recognition should be made in connection therewith. He .moved that a bonus of £l5 be granted. This was seconded by Cr. Rayner. The chairman said the clerk was to be complimented on the work he had done during the last five months. The motion was unanimously carried.
