SEA BOMBARDMENT

OF JAPANESE POSITIONS IN BOUGAINVILLE SUCCESSFUL AMERICAN OPERATION AIR ATTACK ON BUKA LONDON, November 18. An American naval task force bombed Japanese positions on Bougainville for 35 minutes on Wednesday. During the bombardment no Japanese aircraft appeared, but during their return passage down the coast the American ships'’ were attacked by enemy seaplanes and torpedo-bombers, which did ho damage. The Japanese airfield at Buka was attacked heavily by American bombers. The American forces at Empress Augusta Bay have extended their area of occupation. So far 800 Japanese have been killed in that area.
