SILENCE REGARDING RETAIN HINT OF EVENTS BEHIND SCENES PARIS PAPERS DISCUSSING SUCCESSOR (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) LONDON, November. 17, Mystery over Marshal Petain is deepening. Neither the Vichy nor Paris radios, or the hourly news bulletins today mentioned Petain’s activities, which have always been reported in detail* no matter how unimportant. This silence follows on a complete Vichy radio blackout last night. The first, news bulletin today was heavily jammed. Swiss reports at the weekend said- Petain was ill, but French, radio, reports yesterday said, he' entertained a Turkish diplomat, on, -Monday. The Stockholm newspaper “Svenska Dagbladet,” quoting authorised- German circles, stated that Petain- was expected to broadcast his cancelled weekend speech later. The speech will, include news of important political, changes in the Vichy regime. The Paris Press is only discussing the question of Petain’s, successor.
