WEST SCHOOL PUPILS

VISIT TO CLOTHING FACTORY. IN FURTHERANCE OF SCHEME. In furtherance of a scheme put into operation early this year, the senior pupils of the Masterton West School were afforded an opportunity of visiting yet another local industry. Under the auspices of Mr Cathie and his staff, the pupils, in small parties, were taken on an instructive tour. The girls were very interested in the sewing machos, and the dexterity "displayed by the numerous machinists. Several pupils availed themselves of the opportunity of actually working a machine, which gave the added thrill of accomplishment. The general trend of the conversation overheard was the feminine desire to own such a machine, and what might be accomplished with it. The boys were intensely interested in the mass production of uniforms, £nd the technical side, and the manager-pad rather a strenuous time answering the many questions asked. Keen interest was taken in the making and turning of tags, and in the machine used for sewing on buttons, whilst the individual daily output of the several machinists was a revelation to all. In correlation with the everyday school work, and by assisting to broaden the pupils’ outlook, these tours of inspection are proving invaluable, as first hand knowledge is firmly established in the adolescent mind.
