GRAIN FOR BENGAL
ARRIVAL OF HEAVY SHIPMENTS CARE OF DESTITUTE PEOPLE RESPONSIBILITY TAKEN BY GOVERNMENT (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.30 a.m.) RUGBY, November 12. Between July 14 and October 31, a total of 196,000 tons of food grains arrived in Calcutta for the relief of famine. These figures exclude either arrivals at other ports in Bengal or arrivals during the free trade period. Such arrivals alone are reported to have reached 100,000 tons, according to information reaching the India Office. The Government of Bengal has been tackling the problem of relief and is taking responsibility for the maintenance, medical treatment and repatriation of destitute persons to their homes. In Calcutta hospitals there are now over 2,000 available beds for destitute persons. It is also reported that 3,300 tons of food grain are now reaching Calcutta daily, and that 20,000 tons are being sent daily from Calcutta to districts stricken by famine.
