HEAVY GOING
FOR THE ALLIED ARMIES IN ITALY TROOPS HAMPERED BY RAIN & MUD. BUT SOME FURTHER GAINS MADE. LONDON, November 12. Both the Allied armies in Italy are being hampered by bad weather. Their advance is slowed by rain and mud, as well as many mines and demolitions. The Fifth Army in addition has had to beat off repeated counter-attacks. Nevertheless, British and American troops have made gains of up to a mile in places, including the capture of further heights dominating the town of Mignano, west of Venafro. Eighth Army troops have made more progress beyond Isernia and have extended their positions on the River Sangro. A correspondent who was with the Eighth Army in its earlier campaigns describes the conditions it is now encountering as being like those of Flanders in the last war. There is mud everywhere and on the winding mountain roads a distance to be covered in making a given advance is more than doubled. In spite of these conditions the troops are in good heart and spirits. MUCH AIR ACTIVITY IN AND BEYOND BATTLE AREA. CHEMICAL WORKS BOMBED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.30 a.m.) RUGBY, November 12. An air communique states: “The Riviera railway near Cannes and targets near Annecy, in the French Alps, were attacked on Thursday by heavy bombers. Fighter-bombers and fighters caused heavy damage while attacking gun positions, trans, bridges, ammunition dumps and motor transport in the battle area. Fires and explosions were observed after hits on chemical works at Buffi; near Popoli. Night-bombers attacked railroad yards at Prato, near Florence on Thursday night. In all these operations three enemy aircraft were destroyed. Four of our planes are missing.”
