Cyril Watling, in one of his weekly “News from South Africa” broadcasts from London, in the 8.8.C.’s overseas service, told of an amusing incident connected with the landing of the first Basuto troops in Sicily. They went there with the South African Spitfire squadrons. The Sicilians were greatly puzzled about the nationality of these black men. Some Italian civilians asked them who they were. The Basutos answered that they were Abyssinians and had come from Addis Ababa to invade Italy. The story quickly spread. And the islanders now look upon the Basutos with great respect, treat Them as heroes, and do all they can for their comfort.
