MARTINBOROUGH

BOROUGH COUNCIL TOWN HALL CONSIDERED UNSAFE (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Martinborough Borough Council was held on Monday night, the Mayor, Mr C. R. Holmes, presiding. Mr Ben Roberts, M.P., wrote offering his support in the erection of a new post office at Martinborough. The district health officer disclosed a satisfactory report on borough health. A letter was received from Mr R. Girling Butcher, fire controller, stating that the Town Hall was unsafe for picture screening in the event of a major earthquake. The Mayor stated that the hall had been inspected after the quake and considered safe by Mr Swan, a competent Public Works engineer, and two architects. Some sixteen months after Mr Butcher had sent along his opinion. It was decided that all the reports and correspondence on the subject should be shown to the member for the district. It was decided to open the baths on Monday, November 15. A letter of appreciation will be sent to Mr Ancell, traffic inspector, for the service he had rendered to the borough. Women’s Institute, A meeting of the Dyerville Women's Institute was recently held. The competition, marmalade making, was won by Mrs Charles Smith. A demonstration on the manufacture of bread posies and brooches was given by Miss Rowe. A letter of thanks was received from a petty officer in Iceland, who had received a parcel of sea-stockings, etc. A number of parcels were despatched to soldiers overseas. Girl Guides. The annual meeting of the Girl Guides and Brownie companies was held on Friday, when Mrs H. L. Griffiths presided over a large attendance. The president reported that owing to the war it had been an uneventful year, but company packs had been working for the Baden Powell Memorial Fund. Warm underclothing and uniforms were being provided for the Polish refugees. Officers elected for the ensuing year were:—President, Mrs Griffiths; vicenresidents, Mesdames Blundell and Caseley; secretary and treasurer, Miss Shirley Baker; committee, Mesdames Chapman, Kershaw, Pain, Tyler, Hewitt, W. B. Martin, Mason, Neild and Knoll.
