MANY RUMOURS
CURRENT IN UNITED STATES ANTICIPATION OF EARLY ALLIED ACTION. REPORTED GERMAN FEARS. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) NEW YORK, November 9. Rumours of early peace are prevalent in the United States. The New York “Herald-Tribune” says two developments have caused speculation that the Allies are planning an early and decisive blow against Germany. These are, firstly, a drop in stock market prices caused by heavy selling, appaiently in the belief that many companies will experience difficulties if the war in Europe ends suddenly, and, secondly, a conference between President Roosevelt and the Service chiefs, General Marshall, Admiral King and General Arnold. , ~ Observers believe that the President s conference with the Service heads may presage another Allied military conference. . According to reports from Madrid, the Germans arc haunted by a fear that the Allies are preparing to make one big front of the European fortress. They believe the day is not far off when the Allies will put this plan into operation. Until now the main topic between Germans and neutrals in Madrid has been where the Allies would strike next —the Balkans, the Italian Riviera, the French Mediterranean coast, the Atlantic wall or Scandinavia. Now the Germans believe that all is in readiness for a ffo-ordinat-ed invasion at all points simultaneously.
