BATTLE RAGING
ON BOUGAINVILLE ISLAND FOLLOWING ON JAPANESE LANDING. ALLIED TROOPS GETTING STRONG AIR SUPPORT. LONDON, November 9. A battle is raging on Bougainville Island, where the Japanese have succeeded in landing troops to the north of the bridgehead in Empress Augusta Bay, on the west central coast of the island, established recently by United States forces. Allied bombers and fighters are supporting the troops on the ground. Many of the landing craft used by the Japanese have already been destroyed. HEAVY ATTACKS MADE BY HALSEY'S BOMBERS. (Received This Day, 1.25 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Admiral Halsey’s aircraft have made heavy attacks in direct support of the American troops at Empress Augusta Bay on Bougainville. Our ground forces are engaging the enemy to the north of the landing point. Comparatively light air operations are reported in General MacArthur’s communique today. Off Kaimana, in Dutch New Guinea, a heavy reconnaissance bomber scored a direct hit and two near misses against a 1,500-ton enemy freighter.
