FIRST SNOWS OF WINTER

REPORTED IN THE UKRAINE Russians Vigorously Pressing Offensive West of Kiev THREAT TO ODESSA-WARSAW RAILWAY CONTINUED SOVIET PROGRESS IN CRIMEA LONDON, November 9. The Russian armies are pressing their new offensive west of Kiev and have made further considerable gains. The first snowfalls of winter are reported in the Ukraine. In the Crimea the Russians have extended their foothold on both sides of Kerch. Unofficial agency messages state that Kerch was captured by the Russians this morning. Soviet forces are reported to be attacking and to have occupied new positions in the Nevel sector, in White Russia. Today, the third day after the liberation of Kiev, the mam German forces in front of General Vatutin’s army are still in full retreat toward Korosten, Zhitomir and Berdichev. The advances up to last night brought the Red Army to points 50 miles to the south-west of the city and about 35 miles to the west and northeast. Other columns, driving down the Dnieper, had almost reached the Periaslavl bridgehead which was established some weeks ago. . • Messages from Moscow this morning say that the advance on the big semicircular front is continuing. The “News Chronicle” correspondent says that if the thrust to the south-west toward the main Odessa-Warsaw railway extends much deeper the Germans will be forced to withdraw all their armies in south Russia. . He adds that there is every reason to believe the drive will be kept up. Completely new armoured forces are flowing over the plains, and the Russians have tanks, heavy guns and planes in great quantities. The Germans, on the other hand, have suffered and are suffering enormous losses in men and material.
