TIDE OF WAR

TURNED CONCLUSIVELY DECLARATION BY AMERICAN GENERAL DANGER ONLY IN SFL4XING EFFORT (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, November 7. “By these lihrd-won'victor-ies, together with the incalculable success in Russia, in the Pacific theatre and' in devas- v tating air victories over Germany itself,- the tide of war has been titrned conclusively in favour of the United Nations, ’ ’ Lieutenant-General Jacob L. Devers, United States commanding general in the European theatre of operations, declared in London, on the occasion of the appi-vei-sary of the North African lauding.

“From the British Isles, the foremost bastion of the Allies in their assault on Hitler’s European fortress;”" General Beyers added, ”we look upon this past year and find it the most, significant in all history. From a world of darkness there has come a red’ dawn —red, it’ is true, with the blood of many peoples, but dawn nevertheless—which reveals that the forces of darkness are being dissipated. This is the prelude to "that great day of final victory. Before us now lies the main assault for which we are massing manpower and equipment in accordance with a thougthtfullyplanned world strategy."'This’’ "is a crucial moment in the'history' of ’the world. We cannot falter. If we relax our effort or try to escape the sacrifices necessary to victory, that victory may recede. Every man and every woman in the United Nations must brace himself or herself to perform'each his or her work and accept what sacrifices may be necessary.”
