GREYTOWN

BOWLING SEASON OFFICIALLY OPENED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The official opening of the Greytown Bowling Club’s green took place on Saturday afternoon, and despite the rain which fell during the morning the green, although heavy, played true. The president, Mr S. C. Shedden, in declaring the season open, said that the war clouds were much brighter than last year, and expressed the hope that the coming season would be a happy one. Mrs H. McPhee played the first bowl of the season. The afternoon tea was supervised by Mesdames McPhee and H. R. Feast. The first progressive competition for the season was won by H. Johns (leads) and R. Thompson (skips). ST. LUKE’S CHURCH ALL NATIONS FAIR. The All Nations Fair of the St. Luke’s Ladies’ Guild, which was held in the Crown Theatre, was a great success. At the end of the day, over £163 had been handed in by the various stalls. Each stall was made to represent one of the Allied nations, and those assisting were dressed in costumes representative of those countries. The Rev. J. C. Abbott, in declaring the fair open, expressed his thanks to the ladies for their fine effort. In the evening the Sunday school pupils, under the direction of Mis S. C. Shedden, presented a fine _ entertainment, which was well received by the large crowd. The settings and costumes worn by the children were very pleasing. The following were the stallholders: —Tea rooms (Netherlands): Mesdames A. Nichols, S. Shedden, R. O’Neale, J. F. Thompson, I. Blissett, F. Judd, Miss R Thompson: Hoop-la (Czechoslovakia): Misses B. Shedden, M. Wood, B. Burch. Cakes stall (U.S.A.): Mesdames W. Wiggins-, R. Beu, A. Nisbet. A.D.T. (Russia): Mesdames F. Wood, S. Vinsen, G. Te Whaiti. Produce (China): Mesdames S. Barcham, A. D. Burch, A. H. Humphrey, D. Fairbrother, Miss E. Stephens. Sewing and fancy work (Great Britain): Mesdames H. G. Car-, ter, W. Hay, T. Smallwood, Misses L. Higginson, L. Hill. Fruit salad (Free France)': Mesdames G. Burns, E. Williams, Misses G. and L. Gray. Competitions: Miss Smallwood, Messrs G. Eagar, H. Nichols, W. Trotman. Mrs A. H. York, president of the Guild, thanked the members of other denominations for their generous support. CROQUET CLUB SEASON OPENED. The official opening of the season by the Greytown Ladies’ Croquet Club took place on Saturday afternoon. The president (Mrs H. G. Carter) welcomed members and honorary members. Before hitting the ball through the first hoop, she wished them all a very enjoyable season. It being the 21st birthday of the club the Tennis Club members were invited to afternoon tea. A large birthday cake, which had been decorated by Mr J. Reid, was the feature of the gathering. Mrs J. Brunton, one of the oldest members of the club, was asked to cut the cake. She was then presented with a shoulder spray. The president was presented with a posy, after which she presented Mrs A. Haigh (secretary) and Mrs A. Gregor (treasurer) with a shoulder spray. Each past president, past secretary, green supervisor and oldest honorary member received floral sprays. Mrs Tully, on behalf of the Tennis Club, thanked the Croquet Club for entertaining them. The competition winners were Mrs F. Brooks, Misses Stephens and Miss Hill, Mrs W. Grigg being the lucky gate winner. The shoulder sprays were made by Mesdames Carter and E. Richards. Personals. Aircraftman Corporal M. Rees was a week-end visitor to Greytown. Small Fruits Season. The small fruits season has commenced, and gooseberries are now being marketed. Some of the berry growers are experiencing difficulty in securing the labour for picking this season. A number of the regular pickers are now employed at the State gardens, while others arc in various branches of the Armed Services. TOWN HALL “THE GOOD EARTH.” “The Good Earth,” an outstanding drama, will be shown tomorrow night, with Paul Muni and Luise Rainer in the chief roles.
