SERIES OF ’QUAKES
RECORDED IN WELLINGTON SOME FELT IN MASTERTON & ELSEWHERE (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A great earthquake, estimated to have been 3,600 miles away, was recorded at the Kelburn Observatory on Saturday. It started at 8.40 p.m. and recordings continued for over four hours. The seismograph also recorded shocks at 2.40 a.m. (slight), 250 miles from Wellington. At 6.45 a.m. a deep-seated shock, originating 150 miles away, probably to the north, and another at 6.59, 150 miles away, were felt at Masterton, Bunnythorpe and in several other localities. At 6.16 p.m. there was asslight shock, 20 to 30 miles from Wellington. A 8.8. C. report states that an intense earthquake shock was recorded at Bombay. The epicentre was estimated to be 4,500 miles distant, possibly in the vicinity of Japan.
