FOLLOWED UP SWIFTLY BY RED ARMY

Rapid and Extended Advance to West and South-West ENEMY FIGHTING DESPERATELY IN DNIEPER BEND ATTEMPT TO STEM SOVIET DRIVE FROM DNEPROPETROVSK LONDON, November 7. The capture of Kiev, the capital of the Ukraine, which was announced by Marshal Stalin in a special order of the day yesterday, has been followed up swiftly by the Red Army. Powerful armoured forces driving- south-west have captured the railway town of Fostov and 70 other inhabited places in an advance of 40 miles since dawn yesterday. Other Russian forces are advancing- far to the west of Kiev. The great blows struck by the Russians at Kiev and in its vicinity have split two German army groups. The main railway from Kiev to Krivoi Rog has been severed. The Germans admit withdrawals north and south of Kiev. The retreating enemy troops are being harried by Russian bombers and dive-bombers. With the danger of an encirclement of their forces in the Dnieper bend heavily intensified, the, Germans are fighting desperately in an attempt to stem the Russian drive south-west from Dnepropetrovsk. In the Crimea also the enemy is resisting desperately. The Russians have considerably increased their hold on the eastern part of the Crimea, immediately north and a few miles south of the town of Kerch.
