ST. ANDREW SOCIETY
HALLOWEEN CELEBRATED.'
ENJOYABLE GATHERING IN MASTERTON.
The Saint Andrew Society’s gathering in the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening, when Halloweeh was celebrated, was an undoubted success. The hall was decorated with owls, black cats, pumpkins and other appropriate articles and a black-robed and hatted witch, complete with broom, was present. About 60 juveniles were entertained and it is questionable whether they enjoyed the games arranged for them more than the adults enjoyed watching them. Chief Piper Tom Pickett and Piper Peter White led the youngsters wearing paper hats, in the grand march, and then the games commenced. What with a lighted candle relay race, stick passing, musical mat, bun bobbing, etc., the evening passed all too quickly. The Chief explained to the children the idea of Halloween, telling them of the .origin of the pumkins cut to look like faces, and the owls and black cats. Judith Hill and Joyce Robertson each danced a Highland Fling to the piping of the Chiefs Piper Tom Pickett. A bag of sweets, a soft drink and supper rounded off a splendid evening. Mr Alan James and his committee were congratulated on the success of the juvenile entertainment.
After supper the usual programme of Scottish and old time dances was enjoyed by the adults. The Chief announced that on November 30, Saint Andrew’s night, there would be a concert followed by a long night dance, and Mrs Bell had undertaken to supply a haggis for this gathering.
