MINIATURE KANGAROO

“JUMPING MOUSE” FOUND. A specimen of the very rare “jumping mouse” —which resembles a miniature kangaroo—has been found by a girl aged 15, at Girilambone, western New South Wales, and is now preserved in alcohol at the Sydney Museum. This rare specimen, the first recorded capture for more than 75 years, was found in a log. The Museum mammalogist, Mr Ellis Trcughton, said that there were two species of the “jumping mouse” in Australia. The species to which the Girilambone specimen belongs was thought to be extinct, .The “jumping mouse” was a little larger than an ordinary, mouse, with two short front legs, and twp long “jumping legs” like a kangaroo. This hopping structure, said Mr Troughton, was a most remarkable development of a small marsupial to escape from birds and its other natural It had a long furred tail and a small "pouch.
