LAND SALES ACT

EXECUTIVE ATTITUDE SOUTHLAND DISCUSSION (By Telegraph—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, November 5. The policy of non-co-operation by the Dominion executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union toward the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Bill received both condemnation and support from individual members at a meeting of the Southland executive of the Farmers’ Union today. The union throughout the country was being put off-side by the lead given by the Dominion executive, stated Mr A. R. Johnston. Public opinion outside the union was to the effect that through its attitude of non-co-opera-tion the union lost also its right to criticise the actions of the land sales committees. The president, Mr G. Stevenson, said the Act was ambiguous and capable of wide interpretation. It broke down the present system of justice. The Dominion president of the union and its executive should, as leaders of the farmers, be supported loyally in their active protest against a faulty Bill. A member: Is this the only Bill which is faulty? The A‘ct was based on the Russian collective farm system and would result in depriving farmers of the right of freehold, declared Mr A. S. Taylor. The meeting moved on to the next business without adopting any motion concerning the Act.
