SHATTERING BLOW
STRUCK AT WILHELMSHAVEN BY 400 FORTRESSES & LIBERATORS DESTRUCTION OF 48 GERMAN FIGHTERS ONLY FIVE AMERICAN BOMBERS LOST LONDON. November 3. In the attack by heavy American bombers on Wilhelmshaven in daylight today, five bombers are missing. This is one of the smallest American losses in any major operation. Forty-eight German aircraft were destroyed in the raid on Wilhelmshafen and in other American raids on airfields in France and Holland. Fortresses and Liberators, of which there were over 400, accounted for 18 enemy aircraft and Thunderbolts and Lightnings bagged 16. The Germans say the R.A.F. attacked Cologne this evening. Only moderate anti-aircraft fire was \ encountered by the bombers at Wilhelmshaven, but rhe escorting Thunderbolts and Lightnings fought furious battles with swarms of enemy fighters. Airfields in Occupied Europe were also attacked. In all, 48 enemy fighters were shot down, for the loss of ten Allied aircraft.
