MAGISTRATE’S COURT
SITTING IN MASTERTON CHARGE FAILS CASE AGAINST TAXI PROPRIETOR DISMISSED The fortnightly sitting of the Masterton Magistrate’s Court was held this morning, before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. Herbert 1 Rangi was fined £5 and 12s costs for having assisted in the supply of liquor to a native off licensed premises. tk Eight charges of having failed to pay Social Security instalments were preferred by the Social Security Registrar (Mr J. L. Wood) against Joseph Uru. On each of two charges he was fined £1 and 10s costs. The other charges were adjourned sine die on the understanding that Uru paid the outstanding instalments. The Transport Department (Inspector W. G. Milne) proceeded against John McKenzie, taxi cab proprietor for allegedly failing to charge the fare set out on his licence. inspector Milne said that the charge vUS brought as the result of a compmint by a Y.M.C.A. secretary regarding the fare charged a volunteer worker conveyed from the Y.M.C.A., Masterton, to a canteen. ’ The fare charged ■ was ss. Accoi'ding to McKenzie’s licence, said the Inspector, 3s 6d, plus 6d for travelling from the taxi stand in Church Street to the Y.M.C.A. in Church Street, was the charge. Mr 'R. McKenzie appeared for McKenzie. He submitted that his client had made several stops for his fare and he considered the charge fair and reasonable. Mr Lawry dismissed the charge. W. Boyce was fined 10s and 13s 6d ' costs on each of two charges of having permitted stock to wander in the borough.
