Mr and Mrs H. G. Alexander, Pownall Street, Masterton, are visiting Whakataki. Miss Ethel ■ Rutherford, . Tararua Street Masterton, is spending a holiday in Christchurch.

Miss Grubb, Paraparaumu Beach, is the guest of Miss McLaren, Pownall Street, Masterton.

Lady Hart, who recently returned to New Zealand, is staying with Mr and Mrs E. G. Hart, Ponatahi. The death occurred at Pahiatua yesterday of a well known resident in the person of Mr Patrick James Moran.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Nash, stated last night that the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, continued to make good progress from his operation.

The engagement is announced of Yvonne Adeline, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs Bernard H. Wills, Pahiatua, and Barry Charles, youngest son of Sergeant-Major and Mrs C. H. Ritzema, Silverstream. Sir Alexander Roberts and Mr W. A. Kiely, chairman and vice-chairman respectively of the council of the New Zealand Golf Association, were reelected at the monthly meeting of the council. Mr W. E. A. Gill tendered his resignation as a council member after more than twenty years service. Advice has been received by the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Nash, that His Majesty the King has been pleased to approve of the award of the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant A. G. Tait, Royal Navy, for good service in submarines. Lieutenant Tait is serving with the Royal Navy, and his next-of-kin is his father, Mr A. G. Tait, North Street, Timaru.

At a meeting in Masterton last night of the St. John Nursing Division, feeling reference to the death overseas of Miss Mary Innes was .made by Mrs Colin Deans, president of the Division, and also by Miss A. G. Tregurtha, on behalf of the Masterton Voluntary Aid Detachment, of which Miss Innes was an energetic and enthusiastic member. Those present stood in silence for a few moments as a mark of respect to her memory.

The death has occurred at Auckland at the age of 85 of the Rev. H. H. Driver, an elder of the Baptist Tabernacle. He arrived in New Zealand from England at the age of five. He later attended Spurgeon’s College, London, where he was ordained. On his return to the Dominion he became Baptist minister at Wellington. Mr Driver was president of the Baptist Union in 1900 and secretary of the Foreign Missionary Society for a number of years. .He also edited the “New Zealand Baptist’ for seven years.

The appointment by the Australian Government of the Hon. T. G. de L. D’Alton as High Commissioner for Australia in New Zealand, was announced yesterday by the DeputyPrime Minister, Mr Nash. Mr D’Alton has been a member of the Tasmanian Legislative Assembly since 1931, has held various Ministerial posts in the Tasmanian Government, and for the last two years has been Deputy Premier of that State. He is a former president of the Tasmanian branch of the Australian Labour Party. His age is 48. At the Kent Terrace Presbyterian Church, Wellington, last week, Margaret Lenella, second daughter of Mr and Mrs A. C. Holms, Waipukurau, and formerly of Featherston and Masterton, was married to Quartermaster-Clerk Howard Lee Hise, U.S.M.C., youngest son of Mr and Mrs Forest Hise, Indiana, U.S.A. The bridesmaid was Miss Ngair’e Russell, while Mrs J. Smith was matron of honour. Pay Clerk Norman van Miller, U.S.M.C., was best man and First Lieutenant W. Sandusky, U.S.M.C., was groomsman. Toasts were proposed by Mr R. H. Nimmo, Pay Clerk Norman van Miller and Mr R. M. Falloon, Masterton, brother-in-law of the bride. The three-tiered wedding cake was a gift of the Marine Corps.
