CARTERTON

COMING-OF-AGE PARTY MR V. GOODIN HONOURED. (“Times-Age” Special.) Many guests were on Saturday night entertained in the Parkvale Hall by Mrs H. Goodin, of Park Road, Carterton, in honour of her son, Mr Victor Goodin, who has attained his twentyfirst birthday. In addition to Wairaro.pa residents visitors were present from Wellington. An enjoyable time was spent in dancing to the music played by Miss Mary Herrick’s Orchestra. Under Mr D. Jensen’s energetic guidance proceedings went with a swing. Items contributed by the guests included hill-billy songs, duets, tap dancing, songs and extras for the dancing. Much interest was taken in the “mystery parcel” which after many unwrappings revealed a useful household commodity. The supper tables were most effectively decorated with bowls of pastel shaded azealeas, tulips, Iceland poppies and beech.

Miss O. Wolters, on behalf of those present, wished Mr Goodin many more happy birthdays and extended the good wishes of all for his future. • Mr Goodin, who was accorded musical honours, suitably responded. He thanked his mother, Mrs L. Hurndell and all those responsible for the running and success of the gathering. Lucky spot, Monte Carlo and statue dances were much enjoyed. • S.M. COURT SITTING ON WEDNESDAY. Tire monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court will be held *gt the Courthouse, Carterton, on Wednesday afternoon. BOY SCOUTS CARD PARTY ON SATURDAY NIGHT. At the card tournament held by the Boy Scout Committee on Saturday night, the prizes were won as follows: —Ladies: Mrs J. Hooper 1, Mrs C. Holland 2. Men; .Mr Edwards 1, Mr C. Holland 2. WOMEN’S DIVISION SUCCESSFUL DANCE. There was a good attendance at the dance held by the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union in aid of the Mercantile Marine fund. A most enjoyable time was spent to music supplied by Mr T. Udy’s orchestra. Miss E. Lorenzen contributed a much-appreciated extra. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr B. Fryer and partner, and a lucky spot by Mr G. Parker and Miss G. Mouldey. Mr C. Bambry was M.C. School Committee Meeting. The monthly meeting of the Carterton district high school committee will be held tonight. Caledonian Fair. In the State Theatre, Carterton, on Friday next, the ladies of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Guild, will hold a Caledonian Fair, commencing at 10 a.m. The stalls will be provided with an abundance of useful goods, including children’s frocks and woollen garments. Luncheon and afternoon tea will be obtainable. The proceeds wiJ 1 go towards the manse re-building fund. Girls’ Club Concert. As a termination to their year’s activities the Carterton Girls’ Club will hold a concert in the King’s Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday next. Half the proceeds will go towards the soldiers’ farewell fund. Attractive items with effective lighting and staging have been arranged. A play entitled “A Bit of Fame and Glory,” should prove very humourous. The characters will be taken by Doreen Fisher, Lois Deller, Margaret Knutson, Mary Lawrence, Beryl Busby and Heather McKinnon. Dancing, elocution items and singing are included in the programme which, will conclude with a very effective item entitled “The Grand Old Flag.” Farewell Gathering. Dalefield district residents will tender a farewell gathering to Private Basil Gallon, in the Town Hall, Dalefield, tomorrow night.. The guest of honour is well known and was formerly a valued member of the Dalefield Hockey Club. Personal.

A very enjoyable gathering took place in the Borough Council Chambers this morning, when a number of citizens met A.C.I Rex Porter, formerly of the Carterton Post Office staff. The Mayor (Mr D. L. Taverner), in an appropriate soeech, asked the guest of honour to accept a small token from the citizens. Mrs H. Hodder, on behalf of the W.D.F.U., presented him with a parcel of woollies. A.C.I Porter suitably returned thanks.
