Between them they -have captured five more towns and villages. A correspondent states that in this sector the Allied forces are fighting their way towards the heart of the German defence system. The Americans are now overlooking the approaches of Venapro’and the British troops are within striking distance of Isernia. On the other side of the mountains the Allied forces are fighting in a jungle of dense undergrowth. An important town in this area is in danger of being pinched out by the British troops. . n ’ On the Fifth Army’s left flank, despite the difficulty of marshy country, Allied troops have succeeded in getting tanks across a canal and are pressing heavily.on the enemy. On the t Adriatic coast the Eighth Army has been forced to relinquish some ground, but the bridgehead north of the Trigno River is not immediately threatened in this slight enemy gain. Allied air forces have made heavy attacks on Genoa and its vicinity. Units of the United States Fleet have bombarded coastal batteries and a road and railway at the northern end of the Gulf of Gaeta, behind the Volturno River.
