VISIT TO TONGA
MADE BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Governor-General (Sir Cyril Newall) returned to New Zealand yesterday from a visit to Tonga. His Excellency travelled in a R.N.Z.A.F. aircraft and was absent from the Dominion for three days. In Tonga he was the guest of Mr Trevor Johnson, British Agent and Consul. During his visit, his Excellency saw almost every New Zealand man and woman serving on the island and was able to speak to most of them individually. He also inspected units of the Tonga Defence Force under New Zealand command.
His Excellency visited the recreation centre, officers’ club and also the‘New Zealand forces club. The Queen of Tonga, on whom his Excellency paid an official call shortly after his arrival, entertained him at a Tongan luncheon picnic. Tongan nobles and British officials, including New Zealand officers, were present.
