ALLIED WARSHIP SUNK DURING LANDING OPERATION IN SOLOMONS (By Tele°Taph—Press Association Copyright) (Received This Day. Noon.) NEW YORK. October 28. The Tokio official radio says the Allies landed on Mono Island, southwestward of Shortland Island, yesterday. Japanese naval aircraft, the enemy radio adds, attacked the convoy, sinking a warship and damaging another. ALLIED REPORT ONLY MINOR OPPOSITION MET LONDON, October 28. A communique from Allied Headquarters in the South-West Pacific states that American troops landed on Mono Island, south-west of Shortland Island. The landing was made on Tuesday against minor opposition from the occupying Japanese forces. Mono Island is 30 miles from the last big Japanese base in the Solomons, Buin, in Bougainville.
