STRONG ATTACK
ANTICIPATED BV GERMANS IN ITALY ON EIGHTH ARMY FRONT SOUTH AFRICAN AIRMEN SMASH BRIDGES (By Telegraph—(Press Association— Copyright) (Received This Day, Noon.) LONDON, October 28. Offensive patrols on the Eighth Army front show such an increase in strength and numbers that a major Eighth Army effort is believed to be imminent, says the Paris radio. The Germans managed to halt a strong Canadian attack in the Central Apennines. Marshal Rommel is actively organising his defences for a great battle. The Germans, according to the Algiers radio, are withdrawing on the Vasto sector. Reuter’s correspondent with the Eighth Army says South African light bombers put out of action the Paglieta Bridge, four miles from the mouth of the Sangro River, across which the Germans are withdrawing to their next defence line. Two other bridges across the Sangro had previously been smashed. The South Africans also scored two direct hits on a 700 foot concrete bridge. British infantry units arc now operating with the Yugoslav Partisans, according to the Ankara correspondent of the Stockholm “Allehenda.”
