About 8000 persons died in Calcutta between September 15 and October 16 from causes directly or indirectly due to malnutrition, said the Secretary for India, Mr Amery, replying to a question in the House of Commons. Conditions in South-East and South-West Bengal, Mr Amery said, were worse than in Calcutta. Foodstuffs, were being imported into Bengal at the rate of 2400 tons daily. The British Government was making every effort to assist.
