MORE BUTTER FOR BRITAIN.
AS a means of helping to maintain, or to increase Io some extent the meagre supplies available to the gallant people of the Homeland, the rationing of butter in this country is very completely justified and might well have been instituted before now. Very few New Zealanders, it may be hoped, will be at all inclined to complain about the slight sacrifice entailed. There will be no real hardship, indeed, provided care and good sense are exercised in making provident use of the available ration. All that can lie asked is that the machinery of rationing, as it concerns consumers, traders, farmers and others should be made as simple as possible. In the interests of all concerned, and in order that the largest possible additional supplies may be shipped to Britain, this machinery of course must be made fully effective. Some of the arrangements outlined by the Minister of Supply (Mr Sullivan) and his officials may look rather cumbersome and seem to involve a tremendous amount of administrative detail. \\ hether this procedure can be improved upon or not, however, there should be evcixwhere a ready, and loyal acceptance of the restrictions imposed and a complete willingness to co-operate in cutting out waste and helping to make available the largest possible additional supplies ■ of butter for the Mother Country.
