The size of the United States Navy, he said, was dwarfed only by the size of the task confronting it. New construction in three years comprised 23,000 ships, consisting of 333 combatant vessels, 1274 mine craft and patrol craft, 151 auxiliary vessels, 654 yard and district craft and 12,964 landing craft.
