COAL PRODUCTION

INCREASE ANTICIPATED IN AUSTRALIA ACTION TO IMPROVE CONDITIONS. AND ENSURE QUICK SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTE. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (Received This Day, 11.25 a.m.) CANBERRA, Thid Day. The Federal Government, following on a nine-hour discussion between the Prime Minister (Mr. Curtin) and the miners’ leaders, adopted new plans to end coal stoppages and increase production. These include wider powers for local reference boards, to enable a prompt settlement of sectional disputes, examination of the method of collecting income-tax on miners’ earnings, and an investigation by the Federal Health Department of coal mining conditions which produce occupational diseases. The central reference board will be reconstituted and will deal only with general mining matters, affecting more than one district. The miners’ leaders are reported to be enthusiastic over these concessions, which they expect will result in stepping up coal production, Mr Curtin today will meet the mine owners for further discussion.
