CARTERTON
ORDER OF DRUIDS JUVENILE LODGE MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of Pioneer Lodge, No. 25, United Ancient Order of Druids, was held last night, Arch Druid Bro. A. Stretton presiding. All the officers were in attendance as well as a large muster of members. Two new benefit members were initiated into the Order, the initiation ceremony being carried out by the junior officers in a creditable manner, for which they were congratulated by the Superintendent. In addtion to the prize of one guinea for the introduction of most members over a period of twelve months, further prizes of ten shillings for second and five shillings for third were announced. The purchase of suitable games for the use of members was discussed, and the superintendent will make a report in this connection at the next meeting. Members are reminded of the dance to be held in the State Theatre on November 13, the proceeds of which will go to the Benevolent Fund of the Lodge. A committee of ladies will be elected at a later date. MR R. BASSETT HONOURED BY FARMING COMMUNITY. Practically every farm in the Dale-field-Matarawa district was represented at the Dalefield Hall, when suppliers, ex-suppliers and others prominent in the dairy industry, met to honour Mr Robert Bassett, who recently retired from the Dairy Company directorate, after having served for thirty-nine years, the last 27 of which he had been chairman. Many speakers, including Messrs B. Roberts, M.P.. F. Brazendale, L. J. Fairbrother, J. A. Ordish, J. Linton and W. Wilson, spoke in eulogistic terms of the service Mr Bassett had given, not only to the Dalefield company, but to the industry generally, over a long period of years. Mr Peter Bain said it gave him great pleasure to present Mr -Bassett with a gold watch, and Mrs Bassett with a handbag from the company. Mr Bassett returned thanks for the gifts and good wishes, and recalled many interesting facts associated with the company. He thanked Mrs Knowles for the bouquet presented to Mrs Bassett. An excellent concert programme was arranged. Mrs Rofe and Mr Thomas sang solos, Mrs Jones gave a monologue, and Mr H. Graham humorousrecitations. The accompaniments were played by Mrs Fairbrother and Miss Irwin. A ladies’ committee, led by Mrs L. Gallon, tastefuly decorated the stage and tables, and served afternoon tea. Car Parking Prohibited, The parking of cars in Belvedere Street tomorrow (“People’s Day” at the Wairarapa Show) has been prohibited by the Carterton Borough Council. Personal Items. Mr W. Abbott, of Feilding, is the guest of his sister, Mrs P. Hodder, Lincoln Road, Carterton. Mr and Mrs Conway Wadham, of Gisborne, are staying with Mr and Mrs W. Wadham, Carterton. Mrs Thompson, Dannevirke, is a visitor to Carterton and is the guest of Mrs W. Wadham, Brooklyn Road. Mrs Terris, of Kilbirnie, is visiting Carterton for the Show, and is staying with Mrs Harold Goodin, South Carterton. Lady Hart and her daughter arrived in Carterton yesterday from Palestine. They are staying at Kokotau. Sir Herbert Hart will shortly return to New Zealand.
