NEW NAVAL COMMANDER
IN SOUTH-WEST PACIFIC. APPOINTMENT OF ADMIRAL KINKAID. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.40 p.m.) WASHINGTON, October 26. Vice-Admiral Thomas Kinkaid, commander in the Aleutians area, has been appointed commander of the United States naval forces in the South-West Pacific. He replaces Vice-Admiral Carpenter, who becomes commander of the Ninth Naval District. Vice-Admiral Kinkaid attended Colonel Knox’s Press conference at which the announcement of his appointment was made. He told the Press that American destroyers had had some success in sinking Japanese' submarines while the enemy were evacuating their Kiska garrison.
