UNDER ALLIED PRESSURE

GERMANS RETREATING IN ITALY Probably to Last Defensive Line South of Rome FIFTH AND EIGHTH ARMIES THRUSTING INTO MOUNTAINS AIRCRAFT ACTIVE OVER BATTLE AREAS AND YUGOSLAVIA LONDON, October 26. In Italy, the Germans, under pressure from the 'Allies, are hastening their withdrawal to new defensive positions. On the centre of the Fifth Army’s front the Americans have stormed a small town and are working their way round the flank of the German forces in the coastal area. Allied troops have won more high ground a few miles further inland and are now only 15 miles from Isernia, one of the main'strongpoints and communication centres of the new German line. In the Central Apennines the Eighth Army is gradually moving forward and is also forcing the Germans back at other points. A correspondent, stating that the Germans have been forced to abandon some of their positions, says they are taking up the best natural defence line left to them south of Rome. Fighters and fighter-bombers continue to raid enemy strongpoints, troop concentrations and communications. Allied planes were over Yugoslavia again yesterday to raid an enemy airfield 20 miles from the coast.
