AIR ATTACKS

ON JAPANESE IN NEW GUINEA 20 ENEMY PLANES DESTROYED AT WEWAK. BOMB HITS ON SUPPOSED AIRCRAFT-CARRIER. LONDON, October 24. In New Guinea, the Japanese are falling back to the hills north-west of Finschhafen. An Allied communique states that the enemy’s attempt to break through the Australian line and reach the coast has been frustrated. Allied aircraft have kept up their extensive raids in the last 24 hours. The airfield at Wewak was attacked and 20 enemy planes on the ground were destroyed. A large ship, believed to be an aircraft-carrier, was lost.
