Wairarapa Times-Age MONDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1943. AN ENTERPRISING SOCIETY.
POMMENDABIjE enterprise lias been displayed by Hie V Wairarapa I’, and A. Society in taking the first, opportunity of a<>'aiii organising its Show at Carterton, aier a break since, I!)ll?occasioned by the society’s grounds being devoted to other uses' The revival of what has been for many years an. important annual event in the life of the district, has been undertaken in spite of admitted and serious difficulties arising Irom the stress of war conditions and, particidarly, amongst other things, Irom the restrictions at present imposed on transport, and the shortage of labour on farms.
Indications are that in spite of these handicaps the courage and enterprise of the society is likely io be rewarded by at least a considerable measure of success. Entries, some ol them coming from far afield, are on the whole well maintained and in sonie of the leading sections show an increase over the figures for 1941. Arrangements which have been made tor special trains to and from ‘Wellington on People’s Day should contribute to the success of the fixture.
It is certainly in the interests of the district and of its staple primary industries that the organisation of the P and A Society and kindred bodies should be maintained m the best shape‘possible pending its development and extension in the period of expansion to be anticipated alter the war. Jheie should be, in the near .future, great scope for an exle "S‘™ <’, the activities of organisations of this kind into new holds ol enterprise connected with the establishment and development of additional branches of land industry, and perhaps also of associated secondary industries.
In the Wairarapa. as in a good many other par s of New Zealand the establishment, of factory industries in direct contact with primary production-especially industries concerned with the processing of products and by-products is xeiy ai from having been carried to its practicable and desirable limits Organisations like the P. and A. Society may be able to plav a very useful part, directly and indirectly, m promoting and stimulating enterprise on these lines when the ime comes o change over from conditions of war to those ol peace.
Meantime the I’. & A. Society is to be congratulated upon its resumption of activity. It has an excellent claim to all the support it can be accorded by the public generally m these difficult days.
