GIANT CARRIERS

VESSELS OF 45,000 TONS. CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN IN U.S.A. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, October 23. “The United States Navy will build three super aircraft-carpers of 45,000 tons, the largest in the world,” the Secretary of the Navy, Colonel Knox, said today. “The construction of two will begin immediately. “These carriers are to cope with lar-ger-sized planes. They will have greater protection than ever in armament and armour-plating, also in speed, and have the capacity to handle larger and more planes than any ship ever launched.” Colonel Knox said he could not estimate the cost of the vessels, but the “New York Times” says that they are almost twice the size of the Essex class carriers, which cost 60,000,000 dollars. It adds that assuming the war will last three to four years longer, the new carriers will be of inestimable value in carrying the war to the Japanese islands.
