ADMIRAL MOUNTBATTEN TALKS WITH CHIANG KAI-SHEK & STILWELL. HARD-HITTING STRATEGY FAVOURED. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Cops right) LONDON. Ocotber 22. The Allied Commander-in-Chief, South-East Asia. Admiral Mountbatten has been in China for five days, two of which were spent at the Chiang Kaishek’s country bungalow conferring with the Generalissimo, says Reuters Chungking correspondent. For the remainder of the time Admiral Mountbatten had talks with Lieutenant-Gen-eral Stilwell, the American commander in China, and with British and Chinese Army chiefs. A close friendship sprang up between Admiral Mountbatten and General Stilwell, each being pleased that the other favoured a hardhitting strategy. In a Japanese raid on Chittagong, which was reported' on Wednesday, R.A.F. fighters attacked the enemy formation before it reached its targets. Several Japanese aircraft were probably destroyed and others were damaged. Most of the bombs fell in the river, and there was practically no military damage. Civilian casualties were light.
