TRIBAL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Tribal Executive Committee was held at Te Ore Ore, when Mr P. H. Paku presided. A letter was read stating that Mrs K. Te Tau had been recommended for the position of welfare officer. The chairman stated that he had forwarded the Tribal Committee’s donation to the Ngati Poncke Club. The executive representatives reported on the recent investiture celebrations at Ruatoria.
The liaison officer, Lieut. Manihera, outlined his activities since the last meeting. The chairman eulogised the work of Lieut. Manihera. Several matters relating to the activities of the organisation were discussed and dealt with. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE PARCELS FOR SOLDIERS Mrs O’Brien presided over a fair attendance at a meeting of the Women’s Institute. During the afternoon parcels were packed for local soldiers overseas and also a parcel for a Greek soldier. Each member contributed a silver coin which will be donated to the Makogai leper fund. Competitions were won by Mesdames Priest and Seward, with Miss Priest and Mrs O’Brien second, respectively. It was decided to hold a gathering some time in November. The hostesses were Mesdames Lovegrove and H. Gaudin. Personal Items Mr R. Halidone has left for Dannevirke. Miss M. Enoka, Wellington, spent the weekend with her parents at Pirinoa. Mr and Mrs J. Mundy are staying with relatives at Pirinoa. Mr E. H. Nepia, who recently relinquished his duties as sole teacher at the Homewood (Okautete) school, for the purpose of training for overseas service with the Maori battalion, is at present spending a few days with friends in the Wairarapa. Mr W. Karaitiana has received advice that Seaman Dick Te Whaiti has arrived back at a New Zealand port. Mr J. Davidson is on a short visit to Pirinoa. Mrs Tau, Hastings, is visiting the district. Mr Ben Atkinson left on Tuesday to join the Navy. Mr and Mrs Roger Pearce, Wairoa, who were here for the funeral of Mrs Piwari, have returned home. Mr and Mrs A. Nikora have returned to Dannevirke. Mr and Mrs R. Hawkins have returned to Tuturumuri. Miss Mary Riwai, sister of Mr J. Riwai, is an inmate of the Wellington Hospital. Mr S. Thomas was a visitor to Pirinoa over the weekend. Miss B. Carter is staying with Mrs G. Te Whaiti, Greytown.
