HIGH COMMISSIONERS
ADDITIONAL APPOINTMENTS IN AUSTRALIA NEW ZEALAND POST FILLED SUBJECT TO APPROVAL OF GOVERNMENT (Bv Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright,' (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) CANBERRA, This Day. The Australian Government has appointed a High Commissioner to New Zealand, but the name of the appointee will not be announced until the approval of the New Zealand Government has been obtained. A Minister to Russia, as successor to Mr W. Slater, whose retirement has been forced by ill health, has also been selected.
The Federal Cabinet, has decided to appoint an Australian High Commissioner to India. This is regarded as one of the most significant moves made by the Commonwealth Government recently, indicating India's growing importance to Australia, not only while the war lasts, but afterwards. It is believed that one reason for the appointment is India’s growing food problems and the need for alleviating famine there.
The New Zealand and Indian appointments will bring the number of Australian High Commissioners abroad to four —the present commissioners being in Britain and Canada.
